Senneh carpets are made by the Kurds who live in and around the city of Sanandaj formerly called Senneh, capital of the western Iranian province of Kurdistan. Although the name is now Sanandaj, the carpets produced here still go under the historical name of Senneh.
Senneh carpets are made using fine wool yarn that is spun very tightly in the pile while both warp and weft are made using simpler cotton. The result is a rather coarse, but very robust and durable carpet. The unique single-weft construction and use of interlaced warps give the Senneh carpet it’s distinct and durable surface pile and coarser backside. Ironically, the asymmetrical knot also known as the Persian or Senneh knot was named after the city although the symmetrical or Turkish knot is more frequently used to make Senneh carpets.
Senneh carpets typically feature a large diamond or rhomb like design in the centre, beautifully decorated with mir-e-buteh or Herati patterns. The carpets are predominantly made in dark blue and red colours, very characteristic for Kurdish carpets..
Senneh carpets are a popular and price worthy carpet choice, largely appreciated by the people of Iran as well as the rest of the world. Their elegant designs, robustness and darker colour schemes make them a great choice for entrances, hallways and other traficated areas of the home.
Senneh is also home to the woven Kilim-Senneh, considered to be the best of all Persian kilims.
Patina
Our collection of Patina carpets is comprised of older Persian carpets that all show signs of natural wear and ageing. The carpets are carefully selected with the intention of preserving their cultural heritage and breathing new life into them. All our Patina carpets are washed before undergoing a thorough inspection. If any signs of damage are found these are attended to, and if the pile is unevenly trimmed it is gently polished down to achieve an even pile and add a natural sheen to the carpet.
The result is a one-of-a-kind carpet that still possesses all the qualities of an older hand-knotted carpet. A beautiful carpet with a genuine feel that has intentionally been allowed to retain a distinct patina appearance: to be discovered and admired by yet another generation to come.
